Ouch! At -24dB on the display and Tom Hanks leaping up Omaha beach is enough to give anyone post traumatic stress disorder, including those two streets away

A very "warm, rich sound". Do I sound like one of those poncy wine swillers? Ok, it is realistic. Reach-for-the-'phone during the Matrix type realistic.

It has ample power without distortion. And that has been tested up to a level that caused me worry about the structural integrity of the house! I have had to make alterations and improvements including blu-tak under vases and silicon sealent around internal glass to keep the beast in check. DTS-ES, Dolby Digital EX as well as vanilla 5.1 and Dolby Pro Logic II complete the picture as far as sound formats are concerned, with the ability to Matrix 6.1 from 5.1 sources. 6.1 really does bring a new dimension to DVD listening, and it is a great shame that Dolby did not include support for it in PLII.

The inputs are myriad and include four optical, didgital coaxial, analogue for TV, VCR1 & 2, DVR, etc as well as s-video and two video component inputs. Outputs include S-Video, componnent and optical.

A host of DSP modes can emulate concert halls, discos and jazz clubs. Optimisation for everything from a 70mm Sci-Fi movie to TV sports are catered for, some proving much more pleasing than others. Six channel stereo, for example, fills the room with sound, ideal for background ambient music.

The RDS tuner is excellent, although appreciative of a high quality and strength input signal, and offers EON, PTY and all the usual extras including RDS-text although the display of these is rather annoyling only available from the front panel, not the remote.

In short, it is an exceptionally accomplished piece of kit, with no obvious limitations or flaws except perhaps in its' initial set up. The speaker delay setting is fiddly and the speaker connections require nimble fingers.

Bought for £300 from HiFi Junkies within a week of its release it is superb value for money, and with a 2 year guarantee and Japanese build quality should prove its longevity in the years of listening to come.
